5 Questions You Should Ask a Plastic Surgeon
“Talk to your doctor.” How many times have you heard (or said) that?
The truth is, you should be able and comfortable talking to your doctor. So when it comes to plastic surgery, there’s nothing more important than getting answers. Obviously, you’ll want to see before-and-after photos, but don’t stop there. Studies show that outcomes are better when docotr-patient communication is good. In addition to your questions, here are some others you should ask during your consultation.

COPS Celebrates BRA Day for 5th year
Please help us to celebrate our 5th BRA day this October. According to a study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 7 out of 10 mastectomy patients are not told about their options for reconstruction after mastectomy. Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is an international effort designed to educate women about these options. Dr. Lichten and Central Ohio Plastic Surgery are helping to raise awareness and do good in the community. We are collecting new bras to donate to a local women’s shelter. Over the past 5 years, with your help, we have donated over 250 bras to the shelter while raising awareness of this important women’s issue. Please help by bringing a new bra to our offices before October 19. To say thank you, we will give you $25 off of a Botox or other injectable treatment.

Weight loss may influence plastic surgery rates
New figures, released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), suggest that losing a great amount of weight could increase a person’s likelihood of having plastic surgery.
The data found that an increase in weight loss surgeries was having a ripple effect on the number of people undergoing plastic surgery. According to the new research, procedures specifically associated with massive weight loss, such as tummy tucks, thigh lifts, breast lifts and upper arm lifts, grew at their fastest rate in four years in 2014.

Facelifts for Bodies after Weight Loss Solves Sagging Problem
For many, losing weight means gaining sagging skin – sometimes so severe that some may even regret ever having decided to lose weight. But there’s new hope for such weight loss patients with a type of facelift for sagging bodies called “body contouring surgery” that health experts say is on the rise.
According to a recent newsletter from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, weight loss (bariatric) surgeries are resulting in a growing trend of patients seeking body contouring surgery after their weight loss to rid themselves of excessive amounts of sagging skin.
Massive Weight Loss Fuels Surge In Plastic Surgery
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., June 1, 2015 – An increase in the number of weight loss surgeries in the U.S. is beginning to have a ripple effect in plastic surgery, according to new data released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Procedures specifically associated with massive weight loss, including tummy tucks, thigh lifts, breast lifts and upper arm lifts, grew at their fastest rate in four years in 2014, according to the report. That follows a similar increase in the growth of weight loss surgeries.

You Lost the Weight. What About That Extra Skin?
When you work to lose a bunch of weight, you dream of a tighter, toned body. You don’t picture extra, loose skin. But that’s a real possibility, and one that can cause health problems and a poor self-image.
“It’s frustrating to patients who have put all this hard work and commitment into their weight loss journey and new bodies to be left with extra skin that doesn’t reflect that effort,” says Jason B. Lichten, MD, a plastic surgeon in Columbus, OH. “Often, they feel that their extra skin hangs on them the same way their old clothes from before their weight loss would, only they can’t take it off.”

BRA Day 2014
Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) was on October 15, 2014. BRA Day was started by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) to raise awareness of reconstruction options for breast cancer patients. The purpose of BRA Day is to close the loop so that every woman diagnosed with breast cancer is told about all of her options to heal. A study several years ago by the ASPS discovered that a staggering 70% of mastectomy patients were not informed about their options for reconstruction. That means that nationwide, 7 out of every 10 women, were not given the information they needed to make an educated decision about their own bodies and their own care.
Dr. Lichten, who is on the Komen Survivorship Steering Committee, has led a local effort to support BRA Day since its inception. Each year, Dr. Lichten and his office, Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, Inc. have partnered with Fairfield Medical Center to do a bra drive for a local women’s shelter. To date, they have collected over 200 bras for the women.
Every October, Dr. Lichten and the staff collect bras for a local women’s shelter in honor of Breast Reconstruction awareness day. Click here for photos and more info:
