Male Plastic Surgery Procedures

Conveniently located to serve Columbus, Lancaster, Pickerington, and Canal Winchester

Like it or not, society places a high importance on looking fit and young. As social pressure increases, so has the demand from men for plastic surgery. Our patients’ goals range from firmer abs to a tighter face and neck to a smaller chest. Although many of these procedures are the same ones plastic surgeons have been performing on women for years, there are certain differences, such as body type, facial hair growth and skin thickness that need to be considered by the surgeons.

At Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lichten has been performing plastic surgery on men for over fifteen years. “I have noticed a steady increase in men seeking to improve their appearance – whether through Botox or Juvederm, liposuction, Kybella, CoolSculpting or a facelift – the male percentage of my patients is on the rise. My male patients report feeling more confident and comfortable with their bodies.” Men who find themselves competing with younger, more athletic-looking people in the workplace can find increased confidence as they continue to grow in their careers and in their personal lives.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

For some men, extra fat and tissue in their chest can be a source of embarrassment or self-consciousness. Fortunately, Dr. Lichten can perform a male breast reduction for Columbus, Ohio men to correct gynecomastia and resolve this condition.

Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement is quite common among adolescent boys. In fact, up to 70% of boys experience it during puberty. Although this condition is usually mild and short lived, a small percentage of men continue to experience over-developed breasts. Men with gynecomastia will often avoid physical activities and even intimacy to conceal their condition. It is no wonder, then that male breast reduction is one of the fastest growing procedures in all of plastic surgery. In fact, the number of these surgeries has increased 22% in the last 20 years.

Surgery is often a very good option to reduce breast size and create a better chest contour. Two variations of this procedure are available, depending on the patient’s needs. If fat, skin, and glandular tissue need to be removed, Dr. Lichten performs the surgery using a scalpel or scalpel with liposuction, often adding VASER (ultrasonic) liposuction. If only fatty tissue is involved, it may be removed with liposuction alone. Our post-surgery patients report increased self-confidence and comfort with their bodies at the beach, in the locker room and any other time they take their shirts off.

Facial Rejuvenation

One of the hottest areas for men in the plastic surgeon’s office is facial rejuvenation. Advances in technique, products and technology have made easier and more effective than ever before for men to have tighter, younger looking faces. From skin care to surgery, there are options at every level to create a rejuvenated appearance. None of these options will change what you look like, just create a younger, more refreshed version of you. It is crucial, however, to seek out a plastic surgeon who understands male facial anatomy to ensure that the end result is balanced and does not feminize the face.

Botox for Men or “Bro-tox”

Since 2000, the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic has skyrocketed, increasing by 381% according to a study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. “My male patients say BOTOX® is an easy, effective and affordable way to give them a competitive edge in the workplace,” says Dr. Lichten. “Looking more youthful is often equated to competence and productivity, and may help job seekers land their next job more quickly.”

Botox is a quick and relatively painless procedure that can be done over your lunch hour, but that doesn’t mean it should be done by just anyone. All injections at Central Ohio Plastic Surgery are done by Dr. Lichten, who is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and an Allergan Platinum injector.

There are potentially significant differences in using injectables like Botox in men and women, so it is important to choose a doctor who is experienced with using injectables in men. As a general matter, men need higher doses of Botox than women do to achieve similar results. In addition, your doctor will need to consider your specific muscle mass, hair distribution and the pattern of your muscle fibers. Most of our patients report that the fact that they have had Botox is not immediately obvious to others, but they notice that they look like a younger, more refreshed version of themselves.

Juvéderm and Facial Fillers

At Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, we use the Juvéderm family of fillers, including Voluma, Vollure, Volbella and Juvederm Ultra XC. All of these products allow Dr. Lichten the ability to dramatically reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Because each of these products has a different viscosity, Dr. Lichten can use different products to create individualized treatment plans for each patient and can create contours that work for each face.

Facial fillers are incredibly effective in reversing the effects of gravity in the face, with very little downtime. They are one of the least invasive procedures that exist. They do not require you to take any time off after your appointment for recovery, although you may experience some bruising after the treatment. You will be able to see the results of your facial filler injections immediately.

Dr. Lichten personally performs Botox and Filler injections and does not delegate these cosmetic procedures.

“Dr. Lichten was very knowledgable and helpful during the consultation. I appreciated him presenting the options he thought would be best for me, rather than convincing me to spend as much money as possible. I could not be happier with the results of my surgery All of the staff in Dr. Lichten’s office were informative and friendly as well.”

Liposuction, CoolSculpting and Body Contouring for Men

Society has created the ideal of a man who is trim and fit with broad shoulders and chest, a flat stomach with narrow hips and thighs. As men age, however, fat tends to accumulate around the neck, abdomen, breasts, thighs and love handles. Unfortunately, these areas tend to be resistant to diet and exercise. Men will often seek a plastic surgeon to help reduce these fatty deposits either through liposuction or non-surgical treatments, like CoolSculpting and Kybella.

All three procedures can be very effective treatment tools for these areas. Fortunately for men, their skin tends to retain its elasticity longer than women, which means that once the fat underneath is removed, the skin is more likely to snap back into shape, rather than sagging.

Liposuction is an excellent surgical tool for removing localized areas of fat. Dr. Lichten often adds VASER ultrasonic liposuction to get an even better result. It is important to note that liposuction is not an effective weight loss tool, although some fat is removed, it is not the ideal method for massive fat removal. For patients who have stubborn areas of fat that are diet and exercise resistant, liposuction can be a terrific confidence booster.

For those men who do not want to make the commitment to surgery, we have found that CoolSculpting is an excellent option. CoolSculpting protocols have evolved over the last few years and our male patients are getting excellent results using CoolSculpting treatments on their abdomens, love handles, flanks, chins and arms. Unlike surgery, there is no downtime associated with CoolSculpting, so they can immediately go back to work, the gym or any other activity right away.

Skin Care and Chemical Peels

If getting Botox is like going to the dentist for a cleaning, is the toothbrush you take home to ensure your results last. Men have different, thicker skin than women and therefore have different skin care needs. Our office only carries medical grade skin care.

Krista, our aesthetician, is also extensively trained in performing Chemical Peels. She will analyze your skin and use the right strength and formulation of peel to slough off dry, dead skin cells and restore fresher skin. Chemical peels are excellent for acne prone skin, as well as dry, tired-looking skin.

Krista and Dr. Lichten will work together to select a skin care regimen specifically designed to match your lifestyle, goals and budget.

Face and Neck Lifts

for-menFace and neck lifts are another popular procedure for men. As men age, their jawlines and chins lose definition and extra fat tends to gather under the chin. This is followed by sagging neck skin and the appearance of vertical bands, which creates a “turkey neck” effect. Baby boomers are living longer than their parents’ generation and they are leading more active and healthy lives. In doing so, they are more aware of their appearance and wanting the outside to match the trim, fit person they feel like on the inside.

“My male face lift patients come to me saying, that people are telling them they look tired or sad, when they really feel better than ever. They get tired of hearing it and come to me for assistance,” says Dr. Lichten.

As a general matter, men have larger faces, heavier necks and stronger ligaments in their faces. In addition, men tend to have more vascular skin than women, which can cause increased bleeding. The other major distinction between female and male facelift patients is the location and placement of the scars. With women, the scars are typically hidden behind the ears in the hairline. Since men usually have less or no hair, different options for scars must be considered. Also, plastic surgeons must consider the thickness and color of facial hair growth so as to avoid pulling hair-bearing skin too far up. As a man looking for surgical facial rejuvenation, make sure you find a board certified plastic surgeon who is fully trained in the structures of the face and neck and the differences between those structures for men and women.

Double Chin

You take care of yourself, work out and eat well, but nothing seems to take away that stubborn area of fat under your chin. Unfortunately, fullness under your chin is usually thanks to genetics – we are programmed to accumulate fat under the chin, and it’s incredibly difficult to get rid of it with diet and exercise. At Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, we have three terrific options for that area – CoolSculpting, liposuction and Kybella.

CoolSculpting freezes the fat so that the body can re-absorb it. There is little to no downtime and you will see results in a month or two. Liposuction is a surgical procedure where Dr. Lichten uses a canula to remove the fat. Kybella typically involves two sets of injections, two months apart. The results of all three should be a permanent reduction in the fat under your chin.

If there is fat under your neck that is bothering you, we recommend that you schedule a consultation with Dr. Lichten. During the consultation, you can discuss your areas of concern, your budget, lifestyle and goals and together with Dr. Lichten, and come up with a treatment plan that works best for you. We are confident that any of these three options will help you reveal a stronger, more well-defined jawline.

Fraxel re:pair ®

Central Ohio Plastic Surgery is proud to have the only Fraxel re:pair in Central Ohio. The Fraxel re:pair is a fractionated laser that goes deep into the skin to reduce wrinkles and sun spots. It has been our experience that men get excellent results from the Fraxel re:pair, with significantly less down time than their female counterparts, due to the thickness of their skin. Our male patients also appreciate that the Fraxel re:pair requires only one treatment, rather than repeated visits required by other fractionated CO2 lasers.
