How CoolSculpting Works
CoolSculpting, also known as cryolipolysis, reduces unwanted body fat through gentle, precise, and controlled cooling of targeted fat cells. Patients experience a few minutes of intense cold, followed by temporary numbness, and can resume normal activities with no downtime. Once exposed to extreme cold, the subcutaneous fat cells naturally die off and are eliminated by the body without damaging the overlying skin.
This fat-freezing procedure permanently removes stubborn belly and other fat without plastic surgery. It’s ideal for patients who are at or near their ideal weight and have been unable to lose unwanted body fat through proper diet and exercise.
CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells under the skin, without affecting the skin itself. The fat cells are frozen by the treatment and then are broken up and die. Over the next few weeks., the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates it.
Where CoolSculpting Can Be Used
CoolSculpting delivers permanent, dramatic results and is used to:
- Help Stubborn Tummy, Stomach, and Belly Flab
- Reduce Excess Fat on Abdomen, Flanks, and Love Handles
- Eliminate Flabby Upper Arm Fat
- Get Rid of a Fatty Double Chin
- Contour Neck and Neckline
- Slim Inner and Outer Thighs

Your CoolSculpting Consultation
Patients who want to remove stubborn fat from difficult areas of their bodies will first be evaluated to see if they are good candidates for the procedure. The areas where there are localized pockets of fat will be examined.
Patients will also be asked to provide some details about their medical history and their current health condition. After that, patients will be given more information about the procedure and can ask questions about it.
“Love them, so helpful and compassionate.”
Your CoolSculpting Session
Since CoolSculpting is a non-invasive technique, it can be performed right at the office in Columbus or Lancaster, OH. Gel pads will be applied on the target area, and then the applicator will be placed on the area, where it will do its work. During the procedure, a consistent cooling process is delivered, which will target the intended fat cells.
Patients will feel a pulling sensation, which is perfectly normal. After the cooling procedure, the areas will be massaged to encourage the breakdown of the frozen fat.
CoolSculpting Aftercare
Following the CoolSculpting procedure in Columbus or Lancaster, OH, patients can expect to return to their regular activities right away. The recovery period is practically non-existent, although patients can sometimes experience minor soreness or redness in the affected areas. This will go away in a matter of weeks.
CoolSculpting at Central Ohio Plastic Surgery
CoolSculpting® has long been called “the cool way to lose fat” and has generated a lot of headlines since 2010. Not one to jump on the bandwagon to offer fads or trendy plastic surgery procedures or non-invasive body contouring treatments, Dr. Lichten carefully investigated CoolSculpting.
His conclusion – at the time – about this fat-freezing procedure’s claims, risks, and rewards was that it didn’t meet his exacting standards. Dr. Lichten wanted to wait until CoolSculpting could deliver on its promises for the best patient results, satisfaction, comfort, and cost.
Because CoolSculpting wasn’t in the best interest of Central Ohio Plastic Surgery patients at the time, Dr. Lichten opted not to offer it in addition to other, proven procedures like liposuction and tummy tuck.
Now, years later, 6 million people have been treated with CoolSculpting and it’s become the #1 non-surgical fat reduction procedure in the world. That’s why Dr. Lichten took a fresh look at CoolSculpting in the latter part of 2018.
What did he find? Better results. Fewer treatments. Proven efficacy and safety.
It all added up to some very big news for men and women in Central Ohio’s Columbus and Lancaster areas who say they want to “reshape my tummy,” “contour my thighs,” and “get rid of my muffin top” …
CoolSculpting FAQ
+ Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting works best on stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss tool. The FDA has approved CoolSculpting for fat reduction under the chin and jaw, thigh, abdomen, flank, bra fat, back fat, under the buttocks, and upper arm.
+ What will happen during my CoolSculpting Treatment?
First, we will clean the area with a special pre-treatment wipe. Then we apply a custom gel pad, which will protect the skin while the CoolSculpting is freezing your fat. The specific applicator for your treatment will be placed in the treatment area. You will experience a slight sucking sensation as it attaches to your body, followed by signature cooling. During the treatment, you may experience intense cold, pulling, tugging, tingling, stinging, aching, mild pinching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations generally last only a few minutes and then subside as the area numbs. After the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, tenderness, cramping, or skin sensitivity. Patients treating submental or submandibular areas (neck), may also experience a fullness sensation in the back of the throat.
After each cycle is complete, we will perform a 2-minute massage on the treatment area, which breaks up the fat cells and greatly enhances the fat reduction.
+ How long does a CoolSculpting treatment take?
Depending on the number of cycles and treatment areas you are doing, the time will vary. Most of our patients are here for 4-6 hours – but don’t worry – we will give you snacks and have a TV here to keep you occupied and entertained. Most of our patients wind up sleeping through part or all of their treatment time.
+ When will I see the results?
You will start to see changes as soon as 1-3 months from your treatment. Your final results may take up to 6 months.

+ What happens to the frozen fat?
CoolSculpting uses a process called cryolipolysis to freeze the fat cells. When the cells are frozen, they die and are eliminated through the body’s natural processes. Don’t worry, it happens gradually so you won’t even notice it happening.
+ Who should NOT have CoolSculpting?
As with most procedures in our office, if you are pregnant or nursing, we will need you to wait until you are done. In addition, if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria you should not have CoolSculpting. As with any medical procedure, ask your doctor if CoolSculpting is right for you.
+ Does Health Insurance cover CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a voluntary, cosmetic treatment, so it is not typically covered by health insurance or FSA plans. You should check directly with your insurance company to see whether it is something they might consider covering.
At Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, we offer financing options to make the cost of treatment more manageable.
